Abrus precatorius
This climber's eye-catching, primarily bright red seeds look like spotless ladybirds. Their attractive appearance makes them widely valued as ornamental beads and used to decorate musical instruments. They are highly toxic and potentially fatal if chewed or eaten raw. However, in common with many other plants containing powerful phytochemicals, various health benefits have been ascribed to this species, provided the plant material is prepared correctly. In Ayurvedic medicine, the leaves, roots and seeds – having first been crushed or boiled to reduce their toxicity – are used to treat various ailments from fevers to arthritis and also as an aphrodisiac. It is now found across the tropics and subtropics, a native of India, south of Malaysia, and parts of Australia.
