Emmanuel Rehabilitation Centre for Mentally Ill People in Ibadan uses a combination of injectable drugs and prayer to heal patients. The age of the patients range from 18 to 70 years old. Many of them are in chains. Mojisola Adeniyi, who runs the organisation, says they use chains “because this is an open place. If you don’t use chains they might take off and go back to the street again.” She also says that “some are physically violent. If you don’t put chains on there is no way you can hold them.” Adeniyi says that half of the people in the facility have been abandoned by their families. Ibadan, Nigeria, September 2019.
