Man of the forest
Among primates, orangutans are unique in having two completely different types of adult males: The dominant ‘flanged males’ (like the one in the photo) that develop cheek pads (flanges) plus a large inflatable throat sac and become twice as heavy as the females, and the ‘un-flanged males’ that have an appearance and size as the females. This is due to higher levels of androgens (hormones such as testosterone) in the flanged males. Borneo.
