Apollo 7 - October 20, 1968 - NASA ID: AS07-04-1596
Wally Schirra’s face illuminated, as he gazes out of the rendezvous window from his Commander’s station on day nine. Note the plastic food packs taped to the headrest. Due to developing head colds, the crew insisted, against Mission Control’s orders, on not wearing their helmets for re-entry and splashdown (a “Valsalva” device was added to later helmet designs). The packaging was an attempt to protect their head and neck.
