Untitled
A patient at Galkayo Mental Health Centre tries to escape. The facility does not allow any chains to be used but they also do not allow patients to come and go as they please. Staff say this is to protect not just the community but also the patients. "People still attach huge stigma to mental health," says Fatima Farah, a Counselling Psychotherapist at the centre. "They don't know how to handle mentally ill patients - they chain them, they isolate them, they take them to any source of spiritual healers and all of that. The last thing they do is bring them here for medication." June 2011, Somalia.
