SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY FLOWER-LOVING FLY

Below this fly’s eye, you’ll see a long, thin proboscis pointing downward. Many flower-loving flies manoeuvre these tube-like probes to reach deep into desert wildflowers for nectar. Members of a group of large, silvery-grey flies found only in the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico; they can fly quickly and hover over flowers, aerial abilities that also make them efficient pollinators.

Once considered extinct, this fly was rediscovered in 1997 in California’s San Joaquin Valley. But scientists estimate that the remaining population comprises only 100 to 1,000 individuals annually.

تتمتّع هذه الذبابة بخرطومٍ طويل ورفيع ينبثقُ من تحت عينيها، شأنها كشأن العديد من أنواع الذُباب المحبّ للأزهار، والذي تستخدمه كوسيلةٍ للوصول إلى الرّحيق الكامن في لب الزهور الصحراوية، وتتواجد بعض هذه الذبابات الكبيرة ذات اللون الرّمادي المائل للفضّي حصراً في جنوب غرب الولايات المتحدة وشمال المكسيك، وتمتاز بقدرتها على الطيران بسرعة والتحويم حول الزهور، ما يجعلها تلعب كذلك دوراً هامّاً في التلقيح.

وبعد أن كان يُعتقد بأنها انقرضت، اكتشفت هذه الذبابة مجدداً عام 1997 في وادي سان هواكين الكاليفورني، غير العلماء يعتقدونَ بأنّ عدد الباقي منها لا يتجاوز 100 إلى 1000 ذبابة سنوياً.
