According to witnesses, the sinks were used by the military in torturing people in order to extract information and to compel them to join the paramilitary Civil Patrol (PAC), in which they were forced at gunpoint to commit acts of violence on the community.

تجار حطب يبيعون الخشب قرب حوضٍ عام لغسل الملابس في شارع في نباج، غواتيمالا.
بحسب شهود عيان، استخدم الجيش الأحواض لتعذيب الناس بهدف استخلاص المعلومات منهم وإلزامهم على الانضمام إلى الدوريات المدنية شبه العسكرية التي أُلزموا من خلالها على ارتكاب أعمال عنف بحق المجتمع تحت تهديد السلاح.
