Untitled
Many foreign non-governmental organisations fled the Somali capital Mogadishu when fighting in the city intensified. A lot of Somali health care professionals did the same. The patients at Ahlu-Kheyr Public Mental Hospital did not have the means to leave. In many countries over-run by a crisis, traditional and religious healers fill the void left by mental health professionals. At this hospital, a Muslim cleric stepped in to provide care. And as the funding that paid for medication dried up it was replaced with prayer, in the case of this hospital, often delivered to patients through a megaphone. Mogadishu, Somalia, June 2011.
