A male Florida panther jumps through a swamp in the southern Everglades. The cowlick on his back is a vestige of a time, not long ago, when fewer than 20 panthers lived in the wild in Florida and suffered from inbreeding. Although panthers once ranged throughout North America, remote south Florida swamps are the only place in the eastern United States where they survived widespread human persecution and encroachment that brought them near extinction.
