A gelada alpha male bows his head slightly, furrows his brows and sends a mean scowl to another male to express his disapproval of its behaviour. The gelada has the most intense eyes of all the monkeys I have photographed and often a frown like this is enough to settle a dispute. The gelada is the second-highest living primate in the world, ranging up to 4,600 meters in the mountains of Ethiopia. It lives in some of the largest primate societies.
