Seven thousand, very excited, four-month-old sturgeon called fingerlings are released into the St. Lawrence River on a cold fall day. At first, they stay in the comfortable company of their hatchery mates before they grow bold and swim off into the depths and into their future. Fifteen to twenty years from now we hope to see them begin to appear on the spawning grounds as reproducing adults.
