A four-day-old harp seal pup called a whitecoat uses a pyramid of ice to block the relentless winds that scour the sea ice. Adult male and pregnant female harp seals migrate from the Arctic into the Gulf of St. Lawrence in late fall. They wait for temperatures to drop and ice to form. Once the ice is located the seals will haul out in large numbers called a herd and begin giving birth in late February.
