This specimen belongs to a species of Alpinia, a genus in the ginger family. Alpinia occurs throughout the warmer parts of Asia, from Sri Lanka to some of the islands of the Western Pacific. They usually grow in forests but are also frequently found in disturbed areas at the edges of fields and forests. Like a cardamom pod, it contains three rows of fragrant seeds.
