This palm, the sole member of its genus, is found only on the Seychelles islands of Praslin and Curieuse. It produces the world’s largest fruit from a wild plant and the seed is also the heaviest. Such huge seeds provide nutrients to allow the germinating seedling, as seen in this dissected specimen, to compete with other plants. The fruits were traded for centuries as ornamental items, but their export is now illegal.
