The specific epithet for this tree (Grandis, Latin for ‘great’) refers to its leaves, which can grow up to almost half a metre long and are the largest in the genus Banksia. They are arranged in a tight spiral at the base of each of the plant’s flower spikes. The distinctive cone-like fruit head is what remains once the hundreds of tightly packed flowers borne by a single spike have fallen away.
