This shrub (or small tree) was given its scientific name in 1810 by Scottish botanist Robert Brown, whose extensive plant collections contributed greatly to our knowledge of the Australian flora. It is one of the many Banksia that has adapted to survive the bushfires that regularly sweep through their habitat. It is pollinated by the exclusively nectivorous marsupial known as the honey possum.
